Raoul de Chagny was born in Paris, France, in his family’s ancestral home on May 18, 1858, as the fourth child of Philbert de Chagny, the Comte de Chagny, and Eloise de Chagny, who died from complications after giving birth. After his wife’s death Philbert was left to raise his daughters and newborn child with the help of his eldest son. Raoul was the younger brother to Philippe by two decades, and twins, Amelia and Marie by twelve years. Throughout Raoul’s young life, he was home-schooled by various private tutors from the University of Paris, who taught him basic science while also teaching him history, arithmetic, penmanship, and the English language. However, when the boy was seven years old, his father passed away, leaving him to be raised by his older siblings and his aunt. In his youth, Raoul took up fencing in his free time, often practicing with his older brother or one of his family’s servants. At ten years old, the young vicomte was accepted to a private school in Paris, so he could learn to make friends and get a proper education. While at the school, Raoul befriended a group of fellow students who came from various wealthy and noble families around the world. In his third year at the school, the Chagny family took a vacation to northern France where he first met his childhood crush, Christine Daaé, a young Swedish girl, and her father. The two instantly became friends after Raoul rescued her from drowning, spending all of their time together reading Swedish fairy tales in the attic of the girl’s house. Soon the summer ended and Philippe returned to collect Raoul and send him back to school. After a heartfelt goodbye, the vicomte returned to school, where he continued his studies until he graduated and joined the French Navy in 1876.Unlike his brother whose main focus was on the family estate and maintaining the family’s status, the young man wished to travel the world as a sailor. During his first year at sea, Raoul almost drowned only to discover the truth of his parentage. While the man was the son of Eloise de Chagny, he was not the biological son of the former Comte. He was the demigod of the Greek god Poseidon, making him the biological brother to Philippe, and the adoptive brother to Amelia and Marie, the daughters of Athena. However, Raoul wouldn’t discover the truth about his siblings’ parentage until he returned home. Two years later while stationed in Mahé, India, the man met Vijya Malviya, the immortal demigod son of Indra, the Hindu god of storms and the ruler of the heavens. Over time, the man was introduced to Vijya’s wife, Sarika, the demigod wife of Varuna, the Hindu deity of the sky and oceans. The other two demigods became like siblings to him, teaching him about his abilities and the new world he was thrust into. After seven months in the country, the man was recalled to France, but not before exchanging information with the couple. After completing his three years of service, Raoul continued to serve as a member of the navy reserves. When he returned home, the demigod decided to keep his abilities a secret, afraid that his siblings might not accept him and see him as a monster. Months later, Raoul accompanied his brother to the Opera Populaire, where the Chagny family became the new patrons. After the gala for the new managers, Raoul met Christine Daaé again, wishing to rekindle their friendship, but she disappeared from her dressing room. The next day the man received a note telling him never to see Christine again. However, Raoul disregarded the warning and started to spend more time with his childhood friend, discovering that she was a demigod like him. Months later, during the performance of Il Muto, after one of the stagehands were killed, the sailor proposed to Christine after calming her down. Two hours later, during the curtain call, the chandelier fell and would have almost killed Christine if Raoul didn’t push her out of the way.
After escaping the opera house, the couple went to the Chagny estate where they were able to recuperate and begin healing after the ordeal. During the six months that the opera house was closed, Raoul discovered that his older siblings were demigods like him after accidentally exposing his abilities. One day out of the blue, Vijya and Sarika appeared at the Chagny estate after hearing about what had occurred at the opera house. In the months that followed, the two couples did almost everything together when Raoul wasn’t busy helping his brother with issues concerning the opera house. During these months, the man tried to talk Christine out of singing and run away with him, but after seeing that there was no credible threat anymore, Raoul stopped trying to persuade her. After six months, the Opera Populaire reopened and a masquerade ball was held to celebrate the reopening. Half way through the celebrations, The Phantom appeared and threatened Raoul’s fiancé, causing him to venture into the bowels of the opera house, only to be found by a mysterious figure known as The Persian, who returned him to the safety of the building’s lobby. Once there, the man told him the truth about The Phantom but to make sure to keep his secrets. A few months later, after rehearsals for Don Juan Triumphant Raoul followed Christine to the cemetery where she was almost lured by The Phantom to the steps of her father’s grave. The vicomte was able to save her and escape to the Chagny estate where the couple came clean to Philippe and told him what was happening. Philippe promised to have police set up at every exit of the building during the performance, but that did not stop The Phantom from appearing on stage to sing with Christine and whisk her away to his underground domain after the song ended. Once the pair disappeared, Raoul sought out The Phantom with help of The Persian to rescue Christine and bring her to safety. Following a confrontation that ended in Raoul being strangled almost to death, the couple were released and escaped the opera house before anyone could follow them. After weeks, the two demigods left for northern France where they married in a quiet ceremony with the Chagny siblings in attendance.
During the pair's time in northern France, they were visited by Christine’s father, Apollo, the Greek god of archery, music, and poetry, who wished to offer the pair immortality for unknown reasons, which they accepted. Afterward, Christine and Raoul returned home to Paris where the songstress continued taking lessons with The Phantom much to Raoul’s chagrin. For almost a year these lessons continued until the pair escaped to Sweden, living out their days in peace away from the spotlight. By the 1920s, Raoul returned to France after Philippe’s supposed death and claimed the Chagny fortune for himself, claiming to be a distant relative. Now with the title of Comte de Chagny, the man ran the family estate with much help from Vijya while working with charities across the city. When World War II broke out and Paris was captured by the Nazis, Raoul joined the French Resistance as a spy, working alongside his wife and other Resistance members to help free France. When the war ended, the quartet left Paris and traveled to America, allowing capable hands to run the estate until they returned. For months, they traveled the nation, visiting different opera houses and museums across the country. After six months aboard, the group returned to Paris to continue their normal lives. By the twenty-first century, the Chagny family still called Paris home despite constantly traveling the globe while Christine sings professionally.
